The Airport was opened in January 1911, it is the oldest Airport in Germany which is still in operation. In the 1970s, there were discussions of moving Hamburg airport northward to a site near Kaltenkirchen. This plan was subsequently abandoned, and the airport is completing a major modernization that includes new terminal buildings, a new hotel right across from the terminal, new roadside access and a connection to Hamburg's rapid transit system.
All take-offs and landings are concentrated on Terminals 1 and 2. Terminal 2 is mainly used by Lufthansa, Germanwings and their Star Alliance partners. Other airlines such as Air Berlin, British Airways, Emirates, Continental and Air France are based in Terminal 1. The panorama terraces of the restaurants in Terminal 1 and 2 and the panorama terrace adjoining the Model Exhibition offer you stunning views of the apron as well as the runways and landing strips of Hamburg Airport. Here, you have the chance to watch the hustle and bustle surrounding the planes right in front of your very eyes. Access to the terraces is signposted.
Hamburg Airport’s intelligent parking guidance system “Airport Parking” helps motorists to find a parking space at the Airport. As you approach the Airport, automated VMS signs will guide you to the nearest free parking spaces. You can choose from on-airport car parks P1 to P5, which are adjacent to the terminals or the off-airport car parks P8 and P9 at "Weg beim Jäger". Simply follow the signs and you will be guided to the nearest free space. There are over 10,000 parking spaces at Hamburg Airport.
